The lonely courage of the doctoral student

I continue to marvel at the willingness of the doctoral student to keep going bravely into the darkness, as each day they learn more about their field, only to discover how much more they don’t know.

Each thing you painfully discover points to a new set of 100 that you don’t know, and now realize you have even less reason to trust your conventional judgment.

And yet, they keep pushing the boulder up hill.

It’s a tribute to their indomitable spirit, this willingness to keep going, without the certainty of what may be waiting for them at the destination.

Great post. I find that in this world conviction is inversely proportional to education. And that also happens to be one of the big problems in politics. The world is never simple nor black and white, but people want simple, black and white answers to complex problems.
